Payment processing involves a multi-stage lifecycle that separates the verification of funds from their actual collection.
Core Processing Stages
- Authorization: Occurs at the time of order placement. The payment provider approves and reserves the amount, confirming sufficient funds are available without transferring money.
- Capture: Finalizes the payment, typically at the time of shipment or fulfillment. Money is officially transferred from the customer to the merchant.
- Refunds: Triggered during returns to reverse the original capture.
Integration and Execution
- Backend Communication: The system validates transaction integrity before communicating with payment APIs (e.g., Adyen, Planet, or Square).
- Terminal Interaction: For physical retail, the backend triggers the payment terminal to display details and process the action.
- Status Tracking: The Order Management System (OMS) updates lifecycle tags (e.g., PAYMENT CAPTURE) as milestones are reached.
